In the past, 60-amp panels provided all the power homeowners needed to run all of the electrical equipment in their homes. This is not nearly enough amperage to power all of the electronics we use today, and many older homes whose panels have not been upgraded are at greater risk for power loss and fires.
Most modern homes need at least 150-amp panels to provide them with enough power. However, 200-amp and 400-amp panels are available as well, and some homeowners opt to replace their lower amperage electrical panels with these higher capacity panels if they have larger homes or multiple appliances that require more power.
If your electrical panel is especially old, if you notice unusual electrical occurrences (such as flickering lights or a buzzing panel), or if your panel is one that is known to be hazardous (like Federal Pacific or Zinsco), you may be in need of a panel replacement.
